01How local search works
Google weighs three things when it picks local results
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Here is what each one means for a Hawaii business, and which parts you can actually change. Read Google’s guidance (opens in a new tab)
How well a Business Profile matches what someone searched for. Google reads your categories, services, description and website to decide which searches you belong in.
What you control
- The most specific primary category, plus accurate secondary ones
- A complete services list in the words customers actually use
- A website page for each main service, saying where you work
- A business description that explains what you do, not slogans
Outside your control: How Google interprets an individual search, or which categories it shows for it.

In Hawaiʻi
Write “Kapolei” or “Upcountry Maui” where it is true. Visitors and Google both read place names; island-wide claims you can’t back up do not help.
02Distance, on the map
Same search, different street, different results
Google describes distance as how far each business is from the person searching. Pick where on Oʻahu the searcher is and what they need, and see why two people typing the same words can be shown different businesses.
Searching from Kailua (Windward Oʻahu) for “dentist near me”
Illustrative · not real rankings · simplified Oʻahu outline
Illustrative map results
- 1A dentist · KailuaThin Profile: few details or reviewsVery close
- 2A dentist · KāneʻoheComplete, active ProfileNearby
- 3A dentist · KaimukīComplete, active ProfileNearby
- Your business · WaipahuComplete Profile, but not in the top three from hereFarther away
Placeholder businesses, not real listings. Straight-line distance on a simplified outline; real drives differ because the Koʻolau and Waiʻanae ranges are in the way. Google doesn’t publish how it weighs its factors.
Searching from Kailua for dentist near me. Illustrative results: 1, a dentist in Kailua, very close; 2, a dentist in Kāneʻohe, nearby; 3, a dentist in Kaimukī, nearby. Your business in Waipahu is not in this illustrative top three: it is farther away for this searcher.
Why Kailua sees these results
Kailua is on the Windward side, with the Koʻolau range between it and town. The nearest choices are in Kailua and Kāneʻohe. A Honolulu business is farther away for this searcher than it looks on a small map.
Patients come to the office, so the Business Profile shows a real street address and map pin. The office cannot move closer to a searcher, so the rest of the Profile has to earn its place.
Your business in Waipahu is not in this illustrative top three: it is farther away for this searcher. No Profile edit moves your business closer to this searcher. That is distance.
You can control
- The exact address and map pin, checked on Google Maps
- The most specific primary category, and every service you offer
- Hours that stay right, including Hawaii state holidays
- A steady flow of genuine reviews, each one answered
You can’t control
- Where the searcher is when they search
- How many competitors happen to be close to them
- How Google balances relevance, distance and prominence for a given search

05Method
Four phases, each with something you can check
The order matters. Content and reviews work better on top of an accurate Profile and a site Google can read, and none of it counts until it is measured.
- 1
Scorecard & audit
Your scorecard answers, then a review of your actual Business Profile, website, directories and the searches you want to win.
Output: Prioritized action plan
- 2
Fix the foundations
Profile categories and details, on-page basics, technical fixes and call and form tracking, in order of impact.
Output: Change log you can audit
- 3
Content & reviews
Useful service and location pages, a review routine your team can keep, and Profile updates that stay current.
Output: Review kit & new pages
- 4
Measure & report

06Reporting
What a monthly report shows you
Three sources, read together: Search Console for how often you appear and get clicked, your Business Profile for calls and direction requests, and tracked forms and calls for actual inquiries. The example below is a sample with illustrative numbers.

What we won’t do
Local SEO has a reputation problem. These are the shortcuts we refuse, even when a client asks.
We won’t Promise rankings
No one controls Google’s results. We commit to the work and the reporting, not to a position.
We won’t Buy, write or filter reviews
Fake, paid or selectively requested reviews break Google’s rules and can get a Profile suspended.
We won’t Buy links or join link schemes
Purchased and swapped links are a known spam signal. Mentions should come from real relationships.
We won’t Invent traffic or results
Every number in a report comes from your own accounts. Samples are labelled as samples.
We won’t Create fake locations
No virtual offices or keyword-stuffed business names. They work briefly, then get removed.
We won’t Hold your accounts hostage
You stay the owner of your Business Profile, Search Console and analytics. We are added as managers.

Don’t see yours? Call (808) 666-3188 or ask us online.
How long does local SEO take in Hawaii?
Business Profile and on-page fixes can change visibility within weeks; competitive searches take months. We report what changes each month instead of promising a date or a ranking.
Do you guarantee first place on Google?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings. We guarantee the work and the reporting, and we measure success by calls and inquiries.
Can I get a free SEO consultation?
Yes. Start with the free Local Search Scorecard. If you then request a review, a person on our team checks your actual listing and website and emails a short action plan, whether or not you hire us.
Do you work with businesses on Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island?
Yes. We are based in Honolulu and work with businesses across the islands, mostly by phone, video and email. Local SEO is done in your accounts and on your website, so it rarely needs an in-person visit.
I serve several islands. Do I need a page for each?
Only if you have something genuinely different to say for each, like real projects, staff or service details there. Copy-pasted island pages can hurt more than help.
Who is behind Hawaii SEO Marketing?
